This Sucker is Nuclear

So I’m a big fan of the Back to the Future trilogy. So much that I went ahead and created this motion sample at the studio.

My main goal was to keep everything clean and simple. I wanted the characters to read, but without actually illustrating their faces. I also wanted to keep a restricted color palette, and (at first) I wanted it to give an 80s vibe. So I started with neon colors, oranges, purple, pinks, blues, but I gradually pushed for a less vibrant color scheme. Although I think I lost the retro look, I feel the end result is easier on the eyes.

To add to the fun, I grabbed a ton of cartoony sound effects. Sound design has been playing a major role in motion for a while now, and I figured I’d give it a shot. I only wish I had a huge library of effects, because at certain points I found myself stuck. Some of the sounds I tried using were almost too true to real life, and they didn’t fit the style of the animation, so they were scrapped. They weren’t the only things I scrapped though…

My first attempt at this piece was a fail, in my opinion. I was using an audio clip almost a minute long, which was a huge headache to try and work through. Sometimes shorter is sweeter. I also think I gave the characters too much realism for my taste. Changing the characters to the simpler, circular characters allowed for much more freedom when animating, and also allowed for more fluid transitions. All in all, I’m glad I went back and started over. I posted a clip from my first attempt below for your enjoyment, keep in mind this was no where near finished so it’s missing sound fx, music, animated elements, and about half of the animation, lol.
